Getting back to business

Happy New Year!

Now that the holidays are behind us, we’ve been getting back into our regular routine.  While we incorporated a lot of learning into our holiday activities, M is itching to get back into our “school time.”  I’m loving how into learning she is and it’s really amazing watching her just soak it all in.  The cliche, “children are sponges” really is true!  Here’s a preview of what we’ll be working on in the next few weeks…

Writing – M has been really into writing names but needs help to do so.  She is constantly asking for help writing her name, J’s name, mommy and daddy.  It has been a great excuse to go over the letters in each name as we write!  I’m going to take her lead and work on writing practice with her.  She really enjoys worksheets that involve tracing shapes and lines so I’m going to take it up a notch with letter tracing.  I don’t expect her to start writing full words on her own, but she will at least gain confidence in what each letter looks like.

Bible – After spending the month of December doing a Jesse Tree, we are going back to our usual structure of one story per week.  I will probably start skipping around though so as to not repeat stories we just read of part of our holiday traditions.  This is a great supplement to our family resolution to start attending mass regularly.

Letters – I am still working on introducing M to all the letters.  The next ones up will be L, C, W and F.  Since these letters aren’t in any names she has learned, they will be pretty unfamiliar.  I’ve got some fun crafts and activities planned to get her used to these letters.

Reading – We’ve been slacking a little bit lately with daily reading and I plan to step it up!  Whether it’s during the day or before bed, I plan to spend at least 20 minutes a day reading to both the kids.  It’s fun to snuggle up with them and explore the world of books.  An added bonus is that the hubs gets involved with this one too!

M is also at the age where she can start some extracurricular activities so on top of our school work, she will also be enjoying gymnastics and a music class!  We’ve got a busy winter ahead of us 🙂
