declutter challenge

Instead of waiting for New Years to make a resolution, I’ve decided to challenge myself to de-clutter our house now.  There are a number of 30 Day De-clutter Challenges on the web but realistically I know it’s not going to happen in 30 days.  I’m taking all the components of a 30 day challenge and tweaking it to last until the end of the year – roughly 60 days.  I’m hoping that aside from the obvious benefit of a more orderly and organized house, this will allow me to simply for us.

It is so easy to get wrapped up in the “stuff” of our lives that we forget to focus on what’s important – the people, the experiences, the memories.  As I remove the clutter from our house, I’m hoping it will spill over to help us remove the clutter in our lives.  Now is the perfect time to do this as we try to instill in our children the understanding that excess stuff is not necessary.

So for the logistics… I have a list of 20 “areas” in our home to be de-cluttered.  I’m hoping every couple of days I’ll be able to cross one off the list.  I don’t plan on having any particular order to it either since I never know how much time I’ll have each day to work on it.  If I finish before the end of the year, GREAT.  If not, at least I know we’ll be starting 2015 off with a simpler space.

The list is:

  1. Master bedroom/closet
  2. Kids bedrooms/closets
  3. Bathrooms
  4. Kids books
  5. Desk/office
  6. Kitchen/refrigerator
  7. Kitchen/cupboards
  8. Cars
  9. Basement closet
  10. Shoes
  11. Entryway and closet
  12. Linen closet
  13. Our books
  14. Games
  15. Coats
  16. Laundry room
  17. Nightstands
  18. Under beds
  19. Craft stuff
  20. Kids’ toys

I won’t  bore you with an update every time I cross one off the list but I will let you know how its going from time to time.
