Tot School

some very hungry caterpillars come to stay

Awhile back, someone recommended getting a caterpillar kit for M – letting her watch as they grow into butterflies.  Since she has been very into Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar book lately, I figured this would be a great spring project for us (also giving me a chance to try out a more “structured learning” approach).

I plan to spend about three weeks on the topic – just long enough for our caterpillars to become butterflies and be released into our backyard.  I have a tentative, 3 day a week plan filled with a variety of activities that center around our caterpillars (reading, hands on crafts, worksheets, games).  I don’t plan on referring to the activities as school or forcing them to happen at a specific time.  Depending on our week, I will fit them in whenever I see an opportunity.  (If it was up to M, we’d do multiple crafts every day so I don’t see it being a problem).

Here’s how I’m hoping it will go:

WEEK 1

  • Caterpillar kit comes in the mail
  • Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar
  • Read From Caterpillar to Butterfly

Day 3

  • Make Egg Carton Caterpillars
  • Caterpillar number line

Day 5

  • Very Hungry Caterpillar Matching Game
    Caterpillar Tracing Sheet

WEEK 2

Day 1

  • Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar
  • Play “Feed the Caterpillar” game

Day 3

Day 5

Stay tuned to see how it turns out…
